Advent is the season leading up to Christmas where many Christians devote time daily to remember the first coming of Jesus as a baby at the incarnation.

Advent begins each year with the 4 Sundays leading up to Christmas. Participants focus on a theme each week in preparation for Christmas. One advent candle is lit each Sunday and represents one of the four themes of advent. 

Reading Plan

The first Sunday, light the first purple candle, to symbolize hope. Pray prayers of hope for this advent season and the second advent of Christ at His return. Light the hope candle each day of the week while you read through the scripture of the day. 

December 1st – December 7th

Sunday:           Psalm 147:7-11

Monday:          Romans 15:12-13

Tuesday:         Psalm 33:13-22

Wednesday:    Romans 8:18-25

Thursday:        Hebrews 10:19-25

Friday:             Titus 2:11-14

Saturday:        1 Peter 1:13

The second Sunday, light the first purple candle and the second purple candle. The second candle stands for peace. Pray prayers of peace for this advent season. Light all four candles each day of the week, including Christmas Day while you read through the scripture of the day.

December 8th – December 14th

Monday:          Ephesians 2:14-15

Tuesday:         John 14:25-27

Wednesday:    Isaiah 9:6-7

Saturday: Colossians 1:19–20

The third Sunday, light the first two purple candles and the third candle. This pink candle signifies joy. Pray prayers of Joy for this advent season. Light the hope, love, and joy candles each day of the week while you read through the scripture of the day. 

December 15th – December 21st

The fourth Sunday, light all four of the candles up through Christmas Day. This fourth candle represents love. Pray prayers of love for this advent season. Light the hope and love candles, each day of the week while you read through the scripture of the day.
